In autumn 2000 and again in the summer of 2011-2012, Tongariro National Park played backdrop to the hit franchise The Lord of the Rings and the subsequent Hobbit films.
While no official Lord of the Rings tour exists in the Tongariro National Park area, the Department of Conservation have helpfully put together a list of coordinates for key scenes in the films so you can discover the magic for yourself.
