The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a highlight for tourist attractions in the region. Known as one of the best single-day hikes in the world, it’s no wonder it’s so popular.
The 21.4 km track takes a full day to complete and passes Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Tongariro. Along the way you’ll see the Red Crater, Emerald Lake and Te Maari Crater. With volcanic rock under your feet and craters, alpine foliage and ancient lava flows surrounding you, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a very unique and memorable experience.

Winter is a spectacular time of year to hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, however, it is only open to guided treks at this time of year.
For most people, the idea of attempting the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in winter can be daunting.
Trekkers require more gear and daylight hours are shorter.
Luckily for us, Adrift Tongariro specialise in winter treks along the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. They ensure your safety among the ice and snow while offering a world-class hike, whatever the weather.
Adrift Tongariro want you to get the most out of your winter hike. Unlike many other guide companies, no hiking experience is necessary as you’ll get all the training you need before you begin. All transport and gear is also provided. All you need to do is enjoy is incredible experience.

Premium summer group hike
Summer is the most popular time of year to trek the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Although visitors are welcome to go it alone, many prefer to go with a guide, particularly if it’s their first attempt.
When you go with a guide from Adrift Tongariro you’ll be alerted to all the special places along the way. You’ll also be treated to many historical facts and anecdotes that will make you appreciate just how treasured this area is to New Zealand.
Without the snow concealing the many colours along the way, you’ll see the stunning results of sulphur, silica and other minerals released from volcanic activity. The track is busy in the summer time but Adrift Tongariro will take you away from the crowds while still ensuring you see all the popular sights.
Summer hike season: 30 October – 1 April

Private guides are available in winter and summer across a range of different walks and tours with Adrift Tongariro.

Experience Tongariro National Park at the most stunning time of day on a guided two-hour sunset hike. This walk is perfect for those who’d like to be among the volcanic terrain but are pushed for time.
An easy two hour trek, the sunset tour is also a lot less strenuous than the full day treks yet still takes you to the Tongariro volcanoes. Walk for approximately an hour before securing the ideal spot to watch the sun set with a glass of bubbles in hand.
