Mount Ruapehu Tongariro Alpine Crossing sightseeing walk
There are lots to do at Mt Ruapehu if you don’t like to ski or snowboard. With the Ruapehu gondola ride being a top choice, plenty more winter activities are available to keep the whole family entertained.
However, if you fancy a sightseeing walk to remember, we recommend the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing hike.
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a bucket-list hiking experience that becomes even more awe-inspiring in winter. Prepare to embark on this epic adventure through captivating volcanic landscapes, a journey that will leave you inspired and in awe of nature’s grandeur.
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is 19.4 km (12 miles) long and is considered one of the best hikes in the world. It features varied and dramatic scenery that you will surely want to capture on camera, keeping your sacred memories forever!
The track is maintained by the Department of Conservation (DOC) to ensure safety for hikers even in winter conditions. It’s best to start early to ensure enough daylight for the hike. In winter (June to October), we strongly recommend a guide to help you through the variable conditions.
The Park Hotel offers a return shuttle service as part of our accommodation package, ensuring you can begin your hike stress-free and get back comfortably once you’ve completed the crossing.
We also recommend checking the Tongariro weather forecast on the morning of your trek.
