Summer is a great time of year for the Tongariro Crossing
Summer is a popular time to take on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. The same tracks minus the snow means the Crossing is far less challenging in summer than it is in winter. That’s not to say you don’t need to be prepared. The conditions on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing can still catch you by surprise so it’s always best to come prepared for every scenario.
The Tongariro Crossing is widely considered one of the best walking tracks in the country. You really have to see it to believe it. The one-day walk takes about six to eight hours. It covers some of the most incredible alpine terrain you can imagine.
On your traverse between Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruahoe, you’ll see ancient lava flows, mountain springs, active volcanoes, glistening lakes and volcanic rock.
Summer is the only time of year the Crossing can be completed unguided, however we always recommend going with a guide, especially if it’s your first attempt. Our Summer Tongariro Crossing package includes accommodation, breakfast, packed lunches and transport – everything you need for a great day on the track.
